SEACHEM REEF IODIDE 250 mL
- Stabilized potassium iodide source
- Safe and easy to use
- Important for soft tissue growth
Overview
Iodide is an important element required by invertebrates and many soft corals (gorgonians, sarcophytons, etc). Reef Iodide™ is a concentrated (8,000 mg/L) stabilized potassium iodide source for reef aquaria that will restore and maintain iodide levels to those found in natural sea water. It is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions. Iodine is as toxic as chlorine and should never be used in a reef system. However, iodide is as safe as chloride.
Most iodine supplements on the market are simply potassium iodide or a medicinal disinfectant commonly known as Lugol’s Solution. Lugol’s is a highly concentrated iodine/iodide solution that is highly toxic and intended for disinfection. Although such products are sold for use in reef aquaria, we believe the risks vastly outweigh the potential minor benefits.
Reef Iodide™ is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions
Potassium iodide only products are a safer alternative but not very effective alone owing to the unstable nature of iodide in the aquarium environment. When added to an aquarium environment, iodide becomes unstable converting to elemental iodine (which is biocidal), iodate (which is useless to corals, toxic at elevated levels, and can’t be tested for), and iodide which is the only form of iodine available to corals for uptake. These products’ inherent instability makes them potentially dangerous to coral health. Unlike competing products, Reef Iodide™is complexed to a stabilizing compound in order to keep it in the iodide form when added to the aquarium. All of the product remains usable and fully bio-available.
Directions
Beginner
Add 5 mL (1 capful) for each 200 L (US 50 gallons) every other day.
Advanced
Add 1 mL for each 80 L (20 US gallons) daily to raise iodide by 0.10 mg/L. If necessary, adjust amount so that iodide reads 0.06–0.08 mg/L 6–12 hours after the last amount. Thereafter, use this amount daily and check iodide twice a month.
Expert
After determining the iodide consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our Dosage Calculator) to determine how much to add to your top-off water: m=0.125vi (m=mL of product to add to top off water, v=volume of tank in liters, i=amount to raise iodide in mg/L). For example, if you want to raise iodide by 0.10 mg/L in a 200 liter tank, then you would add 0.125x200x0.10=2.5 mL into the top-off water. [For reference: 1 gallon=3.8 L].
Notes
It is normal for iodide levels to decline after a few days. This results from utilization and chemical depletion. Therefore, amount and/or frequency of use can be varied. Amount used can be adjusted based on coral response. To check iodide levels use Seachem’s MultiTest™ Iodine & Iodide test kit.

Reef Kalkwasser™ is a pure calcium hydroxide with unsurpassed purity and solubility characteristics. Calcium hydroxide is used to prepare limewater (kalkwasser) solutions that will maintain calcium concentrations at natural seawater levels. Kalkwasser solutions maintain calcium directly and carbonate alkalinity indirectly. However, its capacity to perform these functions is dependent on evaporation rate and CO2 concentration. If these two factors are insufficient you can provide additional calcium with Reef Advantage Calcium™, Reef Complete™, or Reef Calcium™, and carbonate alkalinity with Reef Builder™ or Reef Carbonate™ (do not mix these directly with a kalkwasser solution).
While Reef Kalkwasser™ is a high purity and economical limewater mix, the beginner, or someone with not as much time to devote to their system, may prefer to use other less involved methods for maintaining proper ionic concentration levels.
Directions
Never add this product directly to the tank. Add 3 g (1 teaspoon) to 4 L (1 US gallon) of water and mix to dissolve. If using pure water, a fully saturated solution is prepared by adding 6 g (2 teaspoons) to 4 L (1 US gallon). Drip this solution into tank. Monitor pH and carbonate alkalinity. Adjust rate of addition to maintain a stable pH (8.3–8.4). Notes: Adding 4 L (1 US gallon) of a saturated kalkwasser solution to 150 L (40 US gallons) will raise calcium by 24 mg/L. Always use the clear supernatant (top solution) only and do not allow undissolved material to enter the aquarium. Keep this container tightly closed when not in use and minimize solution/air contact to avoid calcium carbonate formation/precipitation.

Arowana Buffer™ adjusts pH to 6.5 from either a low or high pH and maintains it there for 2–4 weeks. It safely softens water by precipitating calcium and magnesium. It also supports the ability of arowanas to resist infections. It is the buffer of choice for conditioning water for Asian Arowanas.
Directions
Use 1 level teaspoon for every 40 L (10 gallons) once or twice a month (or as necessary to maintain a pH of 6.5.) Arowana Buffer™ may be initially used daily in cases of high alkalinity until 6.5 is established. It may be added directly to the aquarium at any time. Ideally, it should be used when adding or changing water by dissolving in the replacement water.

AmGuard™ safely, rapidly and efficiently detoxifies toxic free ammonia. It is safe to use during tank cycling and is ideal for treating emergency situations. AmGuard™ is the strongest liquid ammonia binder on the market. It works within minutes to detoxify free ammonia, and it doesn’t degrade for nearly 72 hours. That’s at least twice as long as our competitors’ products. Unlike competing products, AmGuard™ converts it into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. It does not alter pH.
Ammonia can exist in two forms: free and ionized. It is only the free form that is toxic. Traditional ammonia test kits convert all ammonia to free ammonia by raising pH to 12–14; at this pH AmGuard™ cannot function and thus a false positive reading will result. For long term ammonia control, use Seachem Stability® and Matrix™. Use Ammonia Alert® or MultiTest™ Free & Total Ammonia to directly monitor levels of free ammonia. AmGuard™ also removes chlorine and chloramines.
Directions
Use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or as needed to reduce ammonia.
ADVANCED: If you have an Ammonia Alert® that is reading “Alert”, then use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 400 L (100 US gallons) daily. If it reads “Alarm”, then use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily. If it reads “Toxic”, then use 1 capful for every 80 L (20 US gallons) daily.
EXPERT: If using our MultiTest™ Free & Total Ammonia test kit, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons) to remove 1 mg/L (ppm) of free ammonia. Alternatively you may employ the following formula for a variety of ammonia and water levels: 0.125AV=m (for volume in liters) or 0.5AV=m (for volume in gallons). A=ammonia concentration in mg/L, V=the volume of water being treated and m=the volume of AmGuard™ to use in mL. For example, to remove 1 mg/L of ammonia in 100 gallons you would use 0.5*1*100=50 mL.
If water temperature is above 30 °C (86 °F) do not use.

Stability® will rapidly and safely establish the aquarium biofilter in freshwater and marine systems, thereby preventing the #1 cause of fish death: "new tank syndrome". Stability® is formulated specifically for the aquarium and contains a synergistic blend of aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative bacteria which facilitate the breakdown of waste organics, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The bacteria employed by Stability® are non-sulfur fixing and will not produce toxic hydrogen sulfide. Stability® is completely harmless to all aquatic organisms as well as aquatic plants, thus there is no danger of over use.
Stability® is the culmination of nearly a decade of research and development and represents the current state of the art in natural biological management.Directions
Shake well before use. Turn off UV/ozone. Use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 40 L (10 US gallons) on the first day with a new aquarium. Then use 1 capful for each 80 L (20 US gallons) daily for 7 days. Fish and other aquatic species may be introduced at any time as long as dosage is maintained for 7 days. For optimum biofilter performance use 1 capful for each 80 L (20 US gallons) once a month or with each water change and whenever introducing new fish or whenever medicating an aquarium. Product shelf life is 4 years from date of manufacture.
Stability® should ideally be used in conjunction with biological filtration such as Seachem Matrix™. For emergency ammonia control, use Seachem AmGuard™.

Tanganyika Buffer™ is a blend of carbonate salts designed to enhance the natural environment of cichlids by increasing alkalinity, carbonate hardness, buffer capacity, and pH. It is formulated to maintain a pH of 9.0–9.4. For optimum replication of the Tanganyikan environment, use with Cichlid Lake Salt™, Cichlid Trace™, and NutriDiet® Cichlid Flakes.
Directions
Use 5 g (1 level teaspoon) for each 40–80 L (10 to 20 US gallons) of water each day until desired pH is attained and maintained. Thereafter, use as required to maintain pH, usually no more than once every two to three weeks.
TIPS: It is best to dissolve the buffer in freshwater before use. Use when setting up an aquarium or making water changes (preferably after the addition of Seachem’s Cichlid Lake Salt™) and between water changes as needed to maintain pH. Seachem’s Tanganyika Buffer™ is formulated to maintain a pH between 9.0 and 9.4, depending on the amount used. For lower pH, use Malawi/Victoria Buffer™ (pH 7.8–8.4), either alone or in combination with Tanganyika Buffer™.
